Marc Chagall Donates 60 of His Paintings to France

Announcement of a donation of 60 paintings to France and a museum project to house it. Pierre-Jean Moatti, prefect of the Alpes Maritimes, made a statement at the signing of the deed of gift, thanking the painter and announcing the title of the series - the Biblical Message. Jean Chatelain, director of the Museums of France, declares the construction project of the museum to be built in Nice. Marc Chagall expresses his emotion and his thanks.

Jacques Chancel talks with the painter Marc Chagall at his home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The artist talks about his lack of understanding of honors, his confidence in his wife's judgment, his lifestyle and character, his jealousy of young people, the need for a painter to work hard. Chagall then talks about what he blames on the press and radio, his origins, his vocation as a painter, his arrival in Paris in 1910, his conception of art, and illogic. He explains why he wanted to live in France, his judgment of his painting, his lack of vanity, his family, his daughter, his grandchildren, his life at La Ruche in 1910 with Modigliani, Soutine, Cendrars, his satisfaction with the ceiling of the Opera.
