Lionello Venturi writes to Marc Chagall to inform him that the Ravenna Institute would like to create mosaics for exhibitions, based on models by great painters. Lacking a sufficient budget, they suggest that Chagall creates two mosaics, one to be exhibited before being bequeathed to the Ravenna Museum, the other to remain in his possession.
